Prince William Half Race Report by Rachel Wood

The Prince William Half Marathon was my first race of 2017. I decided to use this race as a “fun” way to get in a long training run for MCM 26.2. I appreciated the discount code for being a club member since I registered late.

PRE-RACE: Novant Health UVA Health System kept runners well informed via email. Packet pick up was easy and conveniently located at the Freedom Aquatic Center. I was one of the first people to arrive so I don’t think all the vendors were completely prepared. But for a small local venue it was nice. I liked the provided race tech t-shirt. I really liked the t-shirt you could purchase that had all the runners’ names on the back. I did not actually purchase this t-shirt since this was more of a training race and it was a little more than I wanted to spend on a training race t-shirt but if this was an A race for me I would have definitely bought one.

RACE DAY:

The race being held at Jiffy Lube Live was GREAT! Parking was a breeze to get in and out of. Being able to use a real bathroom before the race instead of a port a potty was the BEST! The race was well organized and started on time. The race route was as advertised as rolling hills but they were not as bad as I expected and I was actually able to run most of them. It was so nice to be able to run on a closed route not open to traffic, super safe with lots of race support on route. The finish line was energetic and the BLING… WOW! One of the biggest medals I’ve ever received! 😊

The only thing I did not love about this race is there is not a lot of crowd support and cheering. They did have high school bands and local volunteers to cheer for racers but there were not a lot of places for family and friends to come cheer you on. The street to the finish line was lined with some family and friends, but since I am a slower runner it was a pretty small group that was still there. With that being said, I actually went back out to cheer in some of my fellow club members so I missed the after-race festivities and can’t give a review on it. ☹

Overall, I really enjoyed this race and had a lot of fun! It was the motivation I needed to get me through the rest of my marathon training. If I don’t run it again next year, I will be out there cheering everyone in and then joining in the after party fun!
